DESCRIPTION:Cedar Falls Community Main Street is preparing for it’s 10th Annual Pink Ribbon Run on Saturday\, October 1\, 2016. As usual we will have great door prizes and awards at race end. But the Pink Ribbon Run committee has added a few new traditions in the past years. We honor our breast cancer survivors with strands of beads to represent the number of years they have lived with breast cancer. We also think it is important for our survivors to come together. So this year there will be a tent for survivors to gather before and after the races. This year adult and youth teams of two will compete October 1st & 2nd. Their challenge is the DSM Adventure Race adventure triathlon\, consisting of three events: canoeing\, trail running\, and road cycling. The event benefits Above + Beyond Cancer\, a public charity with a mission to elevate the lives of those touched by cancer\, and to create a healthier world. The DSM Adventure Race is among the longest races that takes place inside of a single park within the United States. DESCRIPTION:We are planning the 5th Annual Flaughless 5K memorial run/walk in Vinton on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 for our good friend\, Dan Flaugh\, a life-long Vinton resident and former US Army soldier who served in Baghdad\, Iraq. After returning\, Dan struggled with PTSD and took his own life in December 2011 at the age of 25. The Flaughless 5K was started by Dan’s friends and family in 2012 as a memorial to Dan and a tribute to all soldiers struggling with the mental and physical damages of war. The proceeds from the Flaughless 5K benefit the Wounded Warrior Project® Thanks to your support and generosity\, the has raised more than $45\,000 for WWP since it began in 2012. More than 500 people\, including runners\, walkers\, volunteers\, family\, friends and spectators\, attended the events at Riverside Park in Vinton. DESCRIPTION:We Race Because… \n\nOne in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.\nBecause every minute\, somewhere in the world\, someone dies from breast cancer.\nAnd because\, breast cancer knows no boundaries- be it age\, gender\, socio-economic status or geographic location.\nWe continue to Race because at the current rate\, 13 million breast cancer deaths around the world will occur in the next 25 years.\n\n  \nBut\, when you participate and fundraise for the Race\, we fight these statistics together. In 1980\, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today\, that number is 99 percent! Komen has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
